Anybody up there?

One night, a man lost his footing near the edge of a cliff and fell over the side. As he plunged into the darkness, he reached out and grabbed a bush, which stopped his fall. There he hung. No one had seen him fall, and no one knew where he was. He was alone on the side of a cliff.

In the darkness, he cried out, “Lord, please hear me! Save me, and I will dedicate my life to You. Please, Lord, hear me!”

He heard nothing but the wind.

His arms were growing tired, and he knew he couldn’t hold on much longer. In desperation, he yelled, “Can anyone hear me? Is anybody up there? Help! Please, help!”

Still no answer.

The bush began pulling loose from the dirt, and he knew he was about to plummet to his death. Then he heard a voice: “Let go. If you believe, let go.”

“Is that You, Lord? Help me!”

Again the voice said, “Let go. If you believe, let go.”

The man thought for a moment, then called out, “Is anybody else up there?”

At last the bush tore free, and the man fell three feet onto a ledge he hadn’t been able to see in the darkness. He survived his ordeal.

When it comes to life’s important questions, the biggest one is this: Is anybody up there? Is there a supreme being, a Creator? Does God really exist?

In this humorous story, the man’s faith was severely tested, as all of ours are in life, though his test was a matter of life and death. So is it logical to believe that everything we see in the world came into existence without a Creator? Even with my limited intellect, that doesn’t seem possible. Yet people with higher IQs than mine hold that view and stake their very being on pure chance rather than divine design.

I believe there is enough evidence for a person to know for sure, and I am fully convinced of God’s existence in my own life. However, you won’t find God in a test tube or prove He is up there through science. That’s because knowing God comes only through a relationship with Him, and we can come to Him only on His terms. He must call us, and He is calling, but many can’t or won’t hear Him. As Scripture says, “He who has an ear, let him hear” (Revelation 2:7).

Some people are offended by this and believe they can reach God on their own, on human terms. But God has provided a plan of salvation through His Son, Jesus. Even so, many reject Him and want no relationship with Him, even though He made that relationship possible through the life of Jesus. For whatever reason, they don’t want to be ruled by anyone, no matter how good that ruler is. They refuse to submit to any so-called Supreme Being. So they believe a lie and tell themselves no one is up there. And when trouble comes, they turn to themselves or to others for help.

What path are you on? What do you believe?

Do you know if anybody is up there? 🙂 Walt
